The crew radioed the now-famous line, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” What followed was a four-day fight for survival. With the command module losing power, the astronauts moved into the lunar module, Aquarius, and used it as a lifeboat. Engineers in Houston worked around the clock to improvise solutions, including a makeshift carbon dioxide filter built from spare materials on board to keep the air breathable. Instead of landing, Apollo 13 looped around the Moon using its gravity to slingshot back toward Earth.
