Finding the right color formula when you have a moderate to high amount of grey is about balance, not coverage alone. You don’t always need full permanent coverage. Sometimes a demi-permanent formula with the right tone, depth, and reflect gives you softer blending and better grow-out. Other times, strategic permanent color at the root paired with glossing through the ends creates the most natural result. The key is understanding your percentage of grey, your natural base, and how much contrast you want between new growth and length. Grey blending is definitely a lot of work! Some important things to consider as a hairdresser and what you should address in your consultation: 1) have they been using permanent color to cover their greys? If so, how long? • lifting permanent with lightener may cause banding and unwanted warmth that may be harder to tone and blend without proper foiling technique and application 2) what is their overall goal with their greys? • Sometimes clients don’t want to be dramatically grey but still have that transition. So it’s important to communicate tone shade target, frequency of hair maintenance appointment, and what they’re expecting. These are my top two priorities to address. It can help prevent lifting surprises and unhappy clients. Make sure you’re always keeping a clear line of communication with your clients and listen with open ears. Take in feedback and pivot accordingly! I can say my client and I decided that we need another session to break through the old permanent color in her hair. And much finer sections to diffuse those bands in the hair. Alongside figuring out a better maintenance regime for her. I tried a new technique today and I am absolutely obsessed! I’ve been taking some education and also doing the same thing repetitively for years at end creates perfection. It also doesn’t leave room for creativity. I am always wanting to learn more and try something new and that’s exactly what I did today. With Laura!!!, I was able to give her super fine blending to still feel bright but blend with her gray and because of her hair I really won’t need to see her for at least six months. I’m so excited about this technique and so excited to try on all of you!

Every appointment doesn’t have to be complicated—sometimes less really is more. ✨ This client’s hair grew out beautifully, so there wasn’t much needed to keep it looking flawless. We simply touched up her regrowth, and since copper fades over time, we added a few strategic copper lowlights to help make her previous blonde pop again. ✨YOU GET WHAT YOU CAN GET✨✨ OK, so in this instance, my beautiful guest @thelookbookdiary has a natural level 4 mixed with 20 to 50% silver. She has an old balayage grown out and we’ve been coloring her roots with a Demi permanent Igora Vibrance 5-00+4%. My guest wanted to stop coloring her roots so often and have something lower maintenance. Her inspo that she showed me, a lot of them were a lighter level. I’d have to lift her to at least a level 9. There’s just so many things I can teach someone about this scenario. On this post this is what I want you to think about.⬇️⬇️⬇️ OK so #1! I definitely knew I would not be able to lift her to that light enough level to give her that light ashy blonde she wanted to blend her silvers. Because of that double pigmented 5 that we have been using to cover her silvers. Also her hair texture and density. I knew that her virgin hair would lift beautiful, ends would probably lift lighter, but that we would have a darker band. *****So first rule is you have to tell your client whatever your darkest lift is that is what we have to tone it to. Please remember this, even if I knew some of it would lift to lighter levels. I cannot have my client walking around with multiple different tones. I will be making future reels to show you all the footage I got on this. Showing her actual lift, and how I had to tone it. But for now I just want you to know that not every gray blending is going to look gray or silver. A mushroom bronde is a beautiful tone to blend in silver and gray. And in this case, my client looks way too young, to go more to the silver gray side. Watch out for future reels showing the process also what her maintenance will be. Grey blending is trending everywhere right now, but there are 3 things most people don’t realise. 1. It’s not zero maintenance. Grey blending usually means less maintenance than traditional colour, but you’ll still need appointments to keep everything looking soft and intentional. 2. It’s not just “putting a colour over grey hair.” One of the biggest myths is that grey blending is a colour. It’s actually a technique, and there are multiple ways to approach it depending on your hair and goals. 3. There’s no one-size-fits-all result. Some people want full grey coverage. Some want to embrace their natural greys. Others just want to soften the contrast and reduce harsh regrowth. For this client, she still loves being blonde, she just didn’t want that strong regrowth line or overly silver look. So we worked with her natural base using a softer balayage foil technique and a semi-permanent gloss to blend the greys rather than cover them. The result: ✨ softer grow-out ✨ less brassiness ✨ a much more natural blend Perfect if you’re not ready to go fully grey but want something lower maintenance.

Grey blending is not a one appointment fix - and it’s not about never colouring your hair again. If you’ve been tinting a solid root every 3–4 weeks for years, that line won’t disappear in one session - this is a transition. Each appointment: ✔️softens the regrowth ✔️breaks up the stripe ✔️adds depth back in ✔️works with your natural instead of fighting it Done properly, the gap between appointments gets longer - it becomes lower maintenance, not no maintenance. Some women need more blonde. Some need darker lowlights. Some need both. It depends on your natural - white, silver or charcoal - and your contrast. If you’re speaking to your colourist, ask for: ✔️a grey transition plan ✔️strategic highlights and lowlights ✔️a softer grow out approach ✔️a plan to stretch appointments Not “make me silver in one go.” This is about colouring it less - not quitting colour.
