👇 My top 6 tips for landing a literary agent! 1. I only queried my book once it was 100% polished and complete and had gone through multiple drafts (+ feedback from critique partners and my book coach) 2. I researched agents and their stats extensively through MSWL and QueryTracker and *personalized* all of my query letters 3. I wrote about 90 versions of my query letter, making sure every single word packed a punch 4. Once I got a positive signal from my first few queries, I queried a *ton* of agents at once 5. I made sure to query newer / junior agents in addition to querying my ‘dream’ agents 6. I followed up with all agents after I had my first offer; within 2 weeks I had 8 calls with agents who were trying to convince *me* to work with *them*! (Truly such a surreal experience, after years of never feeling like my writing would be good enough.) Comment QUERYLETTER if you want my free guide, a copy of the query letter I sent to agents, + my query letter template! You’ve got this! 📚 💫

You finished your book. You stared at the cursor blinking on the last page after typing The End. And then the panic set in… because no one really talks about what comes next. Most debut authors assume the immediate first stop is hiring an editor. And technically? Yes. Editing is the first step in the publication process. But here’s the part that surprises people: Editing is not the first step in becoming an author. Those are two very different things. Publishing a book is a milestone. Building an author career is a strategy. If your goal is to make money from your books — even part-time — you need more than a polished manuscript. The real early steps look like this: • Self-editing before you ever send it to a professional • Sharing with beta readers and gathering feedback • Starting conversations about your book while you’re still writing • Building your email list before release day • Learning how your genre actually sells • Thinking about your writing as a business, not just a creative project And this is the part almost every debut author flies over in their excitement to publish the book they’ve dreamed about for years. They rush to production… without building the foundation that helps it actually sell. It’s never too early to market. In fact, the earlier you start, the more comfortable you get talking about your work — and the less silent your launch feels. Because now you’re not launching into the void. You’re launching to readers who already know your name. You don’t need hype. You don’t need to go viral. You don’t need to spend $5k+ before you even know if your book will resonate. But you do need clarity on the order of operations. If you want my step-by-step breakdown of what to focus on before you hit publish, I created a Starter Kit that walks you through it. Comment KIT and I’ll send it your way. ✨ Let’s build your author career the smart way — not the rushed way.

Writing advice: Writing tips for new writers 👉 Save for later! . Read intentionally. When you read a paragraph of a novel that makes you tense or delighted or fearful, question why. Think about the word choice, the sentence structure, the pacing, and everything that came in the scene before it. See how you can use these techniques in your own writing. . Practice writing short stories sometimes, even if your end goal is to write a novel. As Ray Bradbury said: “Write a short story every week. It’s not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row.” . Write primarily for yourself, especially if writing is a hobby. There’s always going to be someone who hates something. You can’t please everyone! Writers benefit from a thick skin. If you see a tweet about how your favourite trope is cliche or weird, you don’t need to cut it out of your book. There’s a market for everything, and if you write something you genuinely love, it’ll find its audience. . Try finding a writing community. There’s a link to a free writing club discord in my bio under “free resources”. Sometimes a second opinion helps a lot! . You can break as many “rules” as you like. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to writing. If a piece of advice doesn’t suit you, there’s no need to follow it. Your writing is uniquely yours, and that means you have the freedom to break as many “rules” as you want. . 👉  Save for later 💬  Tell us your favourite writing tips in the comments 🔍  Get resources and freebies in the link in my bio . Advice I'd give to new authors if I wasn't afraid to hurt your feelings: ❤️ Let me preface this by saying, I do hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings and I'm also not an expert! I'm just an indie author who's done pretty well for only having one book out. 🥰 ~ The most important skill to develop as an author is to stop caring about what everyone else is doing, and stop obsessing over other authors journeys or success. Everyone's path is different, say this to yourself as many times as it takes. Even if you copy exactly what someone else does, your results will come out different. It's okay to learn, and grow from eachother. That's what the author community is for, but you need to practice a healthy mindset to make in this industry long-term. ~ Skip the "Bells & Whistles". Just like every authors path is different, so are their budgets for publishing. If someone is telling you that you HAVE to spend xyz to be successful, or you HAVE to have a website, subscriptions to this or that, or all the little publishing extras... RUN. Many of us skip having a website, newsletter, hardcovers, special editions, subscriptions... and we find success anyways. Readers only care about one thing, The Book. ~ Market however you ENJOY. What does enjoyment have to do with marketing? If readers can tell when you got bored writing your book, then they can tell when you hate your marketing. Pick your favorite way to market and master it. You can expand later if needed. ~ Community Value. It's okay to value your data, sales, and goals. But remember not to lose sight of your community values, your reader and author communities should always be prioritized. If all you provide are ads, readers won't stick around, you have to provide some form of deeper value and community. The same goes for building lasting author friendships, we can tell when it's just transactional. ~ I don't believe in 'shadow bans' or algo pergatories. Take the rest you need from social media. Any account can be revived. I've done it on this account and many others at my job and in my event groups. Hope these help! Thanks for reading! #indieauthor #author #authortips #selfpublishing
