The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has collected more than NPR 270 million in revenue from vehicles that violated traffic rules in the month of Magh. The In-charge District Magistrate of Eastern West Khasi Hills, V.A. Hynniewta, MCS, has prohibited the movement of heavy loaded vehicles exceeding 9 tonnes along the Mawmaram–Nongthliew–Mawmih–Mawlyndep Road within the district. The order was issued after reports indicated that numerous overloaded vehicles were plying daily on the stretch, causing significant road damage and posing safety risks to commuters, especially school children. Invoking powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the District Magistrate directed that vehicles carrying loads beyond 9 tonnes shall not operate on the specified route. The order came into effect on March 4, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice. Violators will face prosecution under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023. Traffic police have taken action against 15 vehicles in the Kathmandu Valley for violating route permit rules. During a special check, the vehicles were found parking arbitrarily without reaching their permitted destinations, disrupting traffic management. The vehicles were penalized under Section 160(2)(kha) of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049, officials said.
