I’m a 38-year-old surgeon seeing 40 patients today. Here’s what I wish someone told me 10 years ago: 1. Trying to live up to someone else’s expectations — patient volume, RVU targets, types of procedures — is a fast track to burnout. 2. Give yourself 2–3 years to figure out your practice. What works. What drains you. Then refine it to match your workflow and values. 3. You don’t have to prove your worth through exhaustion. 4. Take care of your body. Training teaches us to dissociate and push through. That’s how chronic inflammation, fatigue, and stress take root. Stress lives in the body. 5. Delegate earlier. As you get busier, your job is to protect your energy. There is only one you — you are the MVP of your team. 6. If part-time is calling your name, listen. Your career is one part of your life — not the whole thing. 7. Your health, your kids, your hobbies, your joy — they deserve equal attention. 8. Success doesn’t create happiness. Happiness creates sustainable success. What actually makes you happy? 9. Confidence doesn’t come from some future accomplished version of you. It comes from remembering your past wins. You’ve already done hard things. 10. You are allowed to design a career that works for you — not just survive the one you inherited. You can be ambitious. You can love medicine.
