And without clear value shifts (lights and darks), the painting loses depth, clarity, and impact. When I point this out in sessions, I often see a lightbulb moment happen. Here are some tips on how you can add different techniques to your abstract paintings and WHY 😉 Brush coverage: Get your base coverage on and don’t waste any paint by simply mixing color direct to canvas. Scraper Layers: Using the scraper can produce some hard areas on top of your brushed on layers. You’ll get some angles and can create attention grabbing LINE in your work. Collage: Get the deli wrap paper (cheap and cheerful!) and pull some prints. Collage is an easy way to anchor a composition. Stencils: Add a pattern (I like to sometimes hide pattern in a small area of the piece- less is more) and if you use heavy body paint, you can make it textural too! Got any questions? Not sure how to start your abstract? I know that feeling. You’re standing there thinking what if I mess it up what if I make the wrong move So you don’t start at all. Let’s make it simpler. Pick up some charcoal and just start making marks No plan No trying to make it look like anything Just let your hand move scribble, draw, make lines, circles, whatever comes out Like you’re not even thinking about it just letting it happen You’re not trying to create a finished piece here you’re just getting started getting out of your head and into your hand Because there’s no wrong move at this stage only movement or no movement And movement is what gets you unstuck. “No, it’s not a waste of paint—this is what most people don’t get about abstract art.”    People think this is a waste of paint… But if I don’t cover the canvas with more yellow, then I need…it will feel forced—not intuitive. This is one of the most misunderstood parts of abstract painting: You can’t force spontaneity. You have to let it happen naturally. Today in the classroom adjacent to my studio at Millhouse in the McKinney Texas Cotton Mill I set up for my abstract soft pastel class. Not many artists use the medium of soft pastel to create abstracts. It is a different process than acrylics or oils, and quite fun to experiment.
