Quick Inspo Video! Elements of an abstract painting: Hi Everyone! Here are some tips on how you can add different techniques to your abstract paintings and WHY 😉 Brush coverage: Get your base coverage on and don’t waste any paint by simply mixing color direct to canvas. Scraper Layers: Using the scraper can produce some hard areas on top of your brushed on layers. You’ll get some angles and can create attention grabbing LINE in your work. Collage: Get the deli wrap paper (cheap and cheerful!) and pull some prints. Collage is an easy way to anchor a composition. Stencils: Add a pattern (I like to sometimes hide pattern in a small area of the piece- less is more) and if you use heavy body paint, you can make it textural too! Got any questions? I’m always asked how I abstract the landscape, this one of the methods I quite often use, but sometimes I paint directly into the photo print to get the shapes or I do this method. I never look back at the previous painting, it’s all about remembering and feeling the shapes. The final stage is all about getting the colours and composition right. Once I done that, I might work it onto a canvas, but again not referring back to my sketches so it keeps fresh. Starting a new background 💕 What makes the abstract paintings so expensive? Artist @carolyn_mara Curator Derrick has explained it very well. Abstract painters like Willem De Kooning, Picasso, Miro, Paul Klee, Kandinsky created new vocubulary with their art. Until then art was representational which could please the eyes. But after the invention of photography it was no point trying to compete with camera in representation which the machine could with just one click. These artists taught the world new ways to look at the world, objects and some even went further to depict inner expressions, thoughts and feelings through colours, lines, shapes. For example the red colour is hot, passionate, bold, aggressive and blue is meditative, gentle, cool, browns are depressive, suppressed emotions and so on. Scientists discovered the impacts of colours and shapes on human minds and these artists were influenced by these theories. They were not painting like a press photographer. They could express an event or person through symbols to bring out the essence of the topic rather than the form. The took further the creative ability of human mind which is not dependent on merely “what we see”. These abstract artists were also influenced by flat and symbolic representation of form by ancient egyptians, Japanese prints, African tribals and Indian miniatures. In all these ancient arts the simplified representation of the man or animal depicted the whole story. Of course this makes it difficult to understand the painting at one glance and one has to read artist statements, manifestoes to get into the world of the artist. Also the ideals of perfection were done with after the world wars and artists saw the imperfection and destruction of life. Perfection sounds like mechanical and imperfection is more natural and human. Abstract art bears all such social, psychological idea. This is more an intellectual exercise alongwith plainly enjoying the visual elements of colours, texture, line separate from any narrative. One has to train oneself to understand these much as one has to train oneself to appreciate classical music. It also encourages many to think abstract art is easy .

My simple step-by-step way to build an abstract painting 🌷 This is my process for creating several smaller, related panels. For this, I’m using six panels and painting on all of them at the same time. I first start with large solid shapes using a big brush, then move into more open shapes with a smaller brush. From there, I draw continuous lines across the panels, then add mark-making and patterns with different tools - everything from a stick to q-tips taped together. I finish by drawing with a tiny brush to bring everything together. I find that this layered approach helps build cohesion, movement, and visual interest across the surface.
