Painting is another form of thinking. I like to see it as a state of non-thinking. A flow state. A moment of full absorption into your craft and purpose, so deeply immersed that time and place don’t exist. Time seems to warp and bend around us because there is no sense of it. In essence, painting is a dialogue between my deepest self and the canvas, and when I enter that flow state all that’s left is the pure, untamed act of creation. One of the most important parts of abstract painting actually happens before the painting even begins. The base layer. Many artists experiment with different base colors and textures because it completely changes how the rest of the painting evolves. A darker base can create depth and drama. A lighter base can make colors glow and feel more open. Sometimes I even add texture in the base layer so that the following layers interact with it in unexpected ways. That’s the beauty of abstract art — every layer influences the next. I begin with raw canvas. Nothing protected, nothing hidden. Just surface and breath. Water first. I let it move freely, like a feeling before it has a name. It spreads under my hand, unpredictable, alive. Then paint. Acrylic pigments sinking into raw cotton, staining rather than sitting on top. There is no full control here — only listening. I follow the motion. With my hands, with a brush, sometimes with whatever is near me — even a plant, dragging thin lines like quiet thoughts crossing a restless mind. Each layer is a response. Each mark is a reaction, not a plan. I don’t paint images. I paint states. Pressure, softness, tension, release. The way emotions expand, dissolve, collide. Working on unprimed canvas means nothing can be taken back. The surface absorbs everything. Like memory.
