Know your intentions! First off, both are important! Yes, you need to be ready when you get on set to act your ass off, reacting and building your character. BUT you’ll never make it on set until you master auditioning. Admittedly when I first got to LA I was completely uninterested in just learning to “audition”. It wasn’t until I met an actor who was doing what I wanted to do, booking major network TV consistently, that I realized I was missing a key ingredients to success. Most actors think “don’t be late” means walking in at the start time. It doesn’t. Our doors open an hour early for a reason. You need time to settle, shake off your day, and actually be ready to work when class begins. Think about your self tapes. How often do you use the first take? Almost never. Those first few takes aren’t acting, they’re you still in director mode from setting up your frame, lights, and sound. It takes time to drop in. And by the end, the energy is usually gone because you’ve drained yourself trying to get there. It’s the same in class and on set. When you arrive early, you give yourself the space to transition out of life/ human mode and into actor mode. You’re grounded, focused, and ready to work the moment the camera rolls.
