Actors often don’t realise the habits they pick up in classes are actually holding them back. Here’s what we see time and time again and why these habits keep you stuck... 🎭 Performing instead of responding: You’re not living the moment, you’re showing it. Acting becomes a presentation instead of a genuine interaction. 🎭 Over-intellectualising scenes: Thinking through every line or motivation pulls you out of the scene. Acting isn’t a maths problem, it’s an emotional conversation. 🎭 Acting alone: You can’t create truth in isolation. If you’re not fully engaged with your scene partner, it’s just monologue pretending to be dialogue. 🎭 Pre-planning how every moment should land: When you decide your beats before the scene starts, you’re cutting off spontaneity. Be specific about your RELATIONSHIPS in the scene! I don’t mean just saying ‘friend’ ‘colleague’ or ‘date’ I mean super specific: they are your ride or die, the light of your life, the pebble in your shoe! Be opinionated about everyone you speak to, but also everyone you LISTEN to. Casting is hyper aware of fake listening, so always listen through the lens of relationship. 1. Go Faster: A lot of young actors slow down too much. Real people talk fast, especially with friends. Speeding up keeps it real and stops you from overthinking. 2. Know Your Lines Cold, Then Forget Them: Basically, know the material so well that it’s second nature—like saying your name—so you can focus on the emotion and not on getting every word perfect. We’re not here for perfect lines; we’re here for real moments. 3. Don’t “Act”—Just Be: The best acting often looks like no acting at all. If your character’s out of breath, do something that actually gets you out of breath. If they’re supposed to be in pain, find a way to physically feel something small. It’s about removing the pretending and making it real for you. 4. Turn Up the Real You: Instead of showing what you think a shy or mean character looks like, find that part of yourself that actually feels that way and just amplify it.
