Teaching the difference between strong acids and weak acids is not just about showing where they fall on a pH scale. Students also need to understand what is happening at the particle level, specifically how many ions are actually present in solution, and that can be difficult because we are asking them to picture behaviors of atoms they cannot see. A simple conductivity demonstration changes that. When students compare a strong acid and a weak acid using a light bulb apparatus or conductivity meter, the difference in brightness becomes an immediate visual connection to ion formation in solution. The stronger glow helps them connect complete ionization with greater conductivity, while the dimmer response helps them understand partial ionization.
