1. It’s not enough to choose something just because it’s lucrative. I started out studying actuarial studies and computer science because they offered stable and prestigious careers. But I had no real interest in either, which meant I wasn’t very good at them in practice. Talent can get you started and discipline can carry you for a while, but genuine interest is what helps you stick around when things feel boring or tough. In hindsight, I wish I’d paid more attention to what I was actually drawn to, rather than what seemed practical or well-paid. 2. You don’t have to get it right the first time. Exploring different roles during my uni years is what gave me clarity. During my internships, I moved between sales, marketing, and content design, and each experience showed me what I was good at, what I enjoyed, where I felt I was adding value, and what paid well. Even the roles that didn’t stick were useful; they helped me rule things out and narrow in on what actually fit me. 3. Your definition of success will change. At 21, a lot of what I wanted wasn’t fully mine. It was shaped by family, friends, or a need to push back. I bounced between earning money at the expense of passion and going all in on passion while living like a starving artist. Over time, I realised I didn’t have to choose between extremes and that it’s possible to find a balance of meaning and stability. As I’ve learned more about myself, what I want from a career and how I define success has shifted. #careeradvice #careerpath
