My inability to comprehend algebra is a poor way to measure my capacity for success in other areas. Despite the learning disabilities, I CAN learn, just not traditional material in a traditional way. 🤷🏼♀️ Students are often told they should just “apply themselves.” However, in the case of specific learning disorders, no amount of “application” can change brain structure. 🧠 ⭐️ Accommodations, modifications, and even substitutions will be the key to success with conditions like this. . #autism #autistic #neurodivergent #learningdisabilities #dyslexia #specialeducation #teacher #specialneeds #disability #actuallyautistic #autismawareness #dyscalculia #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #autismacceptance #education

🗣️Tell me your favorite activities for modeling AAC without expectation! 🚦 “Stop” and “Go” have never been so fun to model through play! I’m using the Touch Chat AAC app to model language without any pressure or expectation—just showing words in action during a playful moment. No demands. No testing. Just connection and exposure. This kind of toy is perfect for the exploratory stage, where young children love pushing, pulling, dumping, stacking, and figuring out how things work. It’s such a beautiful phase of curiosity and discovery. Modeling AAC during play helps make communication meaningful and real. Even if a child isn’t using the device yet, they’re soaking it all in every time we model. What are your go to activities that kids love? 💌 Be sure to share this reel with your SPED teacher besties! 👉🏼 Follow @autismlittlelearners for more tips and ideas. 💾 Save this post so you can come back to this idea later! #slpsofig #slpeeps #preschoolslp #preschoolsped #preschoolautism #autismteacher #autismclassroom #schoolbasedot #schoolbasedslp #preschoolteachers #spedsquad #speducator #spedtribe #autismmom #autismfamily #autismlittlelearners #AACModeling #NoPressureJustExposure #AutismLittleLearners #ExploratoryPlay #PreschoolSLP #NeurodiversityAffirming #CoreWords #PreschoolPlay #EarlyChildhoodEducation #TouchChat

While traditional learning environments tend to stick to rigid rules about what learning “should” look like…at Project Hope, our classrooms have the flexibility to adapt to what best serves our students. This adaptability enables kids to learn at their own pace and in a way that meets their unique needs. 💖 #autism #autismawareness #specialeducation #teacher #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #autismacceptance #autistic #neurodivergent #adhd #sensory #classroom #education

Early Literacy Matters for Blind Toddlers 👏 Early literacy isn’t something that starts in school—it starts from birth, and it’s just as important for blind toddlers as it is for sighted children. Through touch, sound, movement, and rich language, blind children build the foundations for communication, learning, and independence. In this video, Eddie is exploring a low cost tool designed for blind kids called the Braille Doodle. It has a magnet pen and magnet board and Eddie can make Braille letters or draw raised pictures to feel. #blind #lca #fblifestyle #braille #literacy braillematters blindkidscan brailledoodle

It may seem like a small thing but if you think about what it means to have a speaking child who can use words to share an array of emotions… contrast that with a kid who is feeling all the things but lacks the ability to use spoken language. What joy that he can tell us exactly what he finds yummy- not just eating to eat, but letting us know he finds this croissant particularly yummy. I’m not going to lie, when we were introduced to AAC devices we didn’t get it. Let me simplify this- it’s most often just an iPad with software on it. There are different apps- we’re currently using #Proloquo2Go The first few months were frustrating- how was this going to help us, why was it so complicated, wouldn’t this make him dependent and less prone to speaking?? But I’ll admit I was wrong. Little man navigates through this thing finding words I didn’t even know were on there. When we do songs, he’ll tap through as many of the words as he can match. Just cos he doesn’t speak, doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand. Even better, he sometimes not only touches the word, he mouths along with it- effectively increasing moments when we actual hear him speak. I still hope for a time when we don’t need this, but the alternative wasn’t good for him or us. All the Frustration as we tried to guess what he was trying to share. We try to never leave home without this and while we could load the software to other devices, we’ve been advised that it’s best to have just one dedicated device that only serves as his communication device as opposed to a tablet for watching cartoons/playing games. It may be an imperfect tool but it’s a very useful one. #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptancemonth #autismisbeautiful #neurodiverse #autismfamily #autismparents #autismawareness #aacdevice #nonverbal #nonspeaking #nonverbalautism #nonspeakingautism #onthespectrum #autistickids

I’m starting a new series where I share teaching routines from our classroom using AAC and assistive technology. We begin our math routine by “waking up” our numbers! Students use a spinner to choose a fun way to wake the numbers, and as they count, I model counting on the AAC device. Math can sometimes feel repetitive for our learners, so I’m always looking for ways to make it interactive, engaging, and meaningful. Small routines like this help build participation, communication, and number sense ☺️ #specialeducationclassroom #specialeducationteacher #aac #specialeducation
