You don’t beat addiction by running from pain. Dr K explains why most people relapse, even when they realise how destructive their addiction is. If your only goal is to escape pain, you’ll keep surrendering to the part of yourself that wants comfort. But real recovery starts when you stop avoiding pain and start facing it. You must surrender, not to the addiction, but to the challenge of healing. Do you think addiction is about weakness, or pain? Credit: @healthygamer_gg x @thediaryofaceopodcast

In the world of recovery, we call addiction a family disease, and there is a very real reason for that. Addiction affects the entire family, and the entire family plays a role. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen family dynamics contribute to someone’s inability to quit, their continued use, or even the original trauma that sparked the cycle in the first place. Yet from the family’s perspective, it is often viewed as only the loved one’s problem. What is missed is that the family also has work to do if they truly want to reduce the length, severity, and impact of the addiction. If I could tell any parent or loved one one thing, it would be this. Please take the time to educate yourself about addiction. Learn how it works and understand the ways you may be making things worse or better without realizing it. Find a therapist who specializes in addiction and codependency. If you are a mom, make sure dad is just as involved. Locate your nearest Al Anon or Nar Anon meetings. These rooms are filled with parents and families walking through the same fire you are. They offer tools, perspective, and support that you cannot get by doing this alone. One of the biggest mistakes families make is letting fate run its course or leaving everything up to treatment centers and the addict themselves. A person has a far greater chance of success when the family is involved, but only when the family is involved in the right way. If you or a loved one is struggling, you are not alone.
