The Indian Navy has added a powerful new warship, INS Anjadip, to strengthen its coastal security. Commissioned at Chennai Port, this vessel is specially designed to detect and counter enemy submarines operating close to India’s shores. It is the third ship under the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft project. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), the 77-metre-long ship carries more than 80% indigenous equipment, highlighting India’s growing strength in defence manufacturing. Named after an island near Karwar, INS Anjadip is equipped with modern sonar systems, including the hull-mounted “Abhay” sonar, along with lightweight torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets. At the commissioning ceremony, Navy Chief Dinesh K Tripathi shared the Navy’s long-term goal of becoming a 200-plus ship force by 2035. He also emphasized India’s push toward complete self-reliance in shipbuilding and defence technology. INS Anjadip joins earlier vessels INS Arnala and Androth in strengthening anti-submarine operations. Apart from hunting submarines, the agile ship can also handle coastal surveillance, search and rescue missions, and other maritime security tasks.
