A highly-skilled Australian Army paratrooper has died during a training exercise at the Jervis Bay Airfield on the New South Wales South Coast. Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, 50, from the special air service regiment, was killed when he fell to the ground after a mid-air collision with another paratrooper last night. Australian Army Special Operations Commander Major General Garth Gould said Warrant Officer Muddle had been assisting a specialist parachute training activity. "After successfully opening their parachutes, what we know about the incident is that both paratroopers collided several hundred feet above the ground whilst they were manoeuvring towards the drop zone," he said. "After the collision, both soldiers fell from height." The other paratrooper, a sergeant from the Australian Defence Force Parachute School, survived the fall with minor injuries. "Both paratroopers were highly skilled. Between the two of them, they had several thousand jumps to their credit," Major General Gould said. Warrant Officer Muddle's death is the second parachute-related death in as many years. Backlash on social media criticising the appointment of the first woman to lead the Australian army has been described as 'despicable', as experts say more work is needed to improve representation across defence. Susan Coyle, current chief of joint capabilities, will be the first woman to be appointed head of any branch of the Australian Defence Force when she steps into the role of chief of army in July. Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy hit back at social media commentary that accused the appointment being one of diversity and inclusion. 'It's despicable and disgraceful...She's incredibly professional, intelligent, a soldier who lives the values of the Australian Defence Force,' he told ABC Radio on Tuesday. Since when was joining toastmasters necessary to be eligible for the Military? ㅤ I asked the Defence Department for the second time in 12 months why they are making it so hard for young adults to join the military. ㅤ I get a steady flow of correspondence from concerned parents who are dismayed that their children are not accepted into the military. ㅤ Most of these parents are veterans who can’t believe the reasons their children are being knocked back. ㅤ One young man was told he should join toastmasters to work on his communication. ㅤ Someone’s ability to communicate is generally a function of their confidence is it not?
