On today’s episode of “things not officially on the ADHD list but probably should be”… handwriting. From perfect and calm one minute, to full doctor-scribbles the next. Switching between cursive and print, sometimes even ambidextrous - it’s chaotic but that is the calling card of our people 😅 Who else would probably be profiled as a psych0path if a ahndwriting expert was looking at your work? 🙋♀️🤦♀️ #adhd #adhdlife #neurodivergent #relatablehumour #handwriting #diagnostic

i NEED to know if other people do this too. i saw on tiktok that apparently a lot of ND people have similar pencil grips/writing style. ps, this is not to say that everyone who is x does y… just something i thought was interesting! 🙂 not all neurodivergent people are the same or have the same traits, and i misspoke in the beginning. i meant to say that i learned that APPARENTLY many ND people share these behaviours. #autism #neurodivergent #audhd #actuallyautistic #neurodiversity #adhd #autismawareness #autismacceptance #neurodiverse

Oh no is right! When a child lays their head down on their table or desk like this, it usually means one thing: ❌ COMPENSATION ❌ They’re compensating for weakness or challenges. Typically relating to poor ocular motor skills, convergence insufficiency, or weak visual skills. Sometimes it’s because they didn’t crawl as a baby, sometimes it’s genetic, sometimes there’s no underlying ‘cause.’ Rarely it’s due to fatigue, especially if you notice this position immediately after they start writing. So if your child is writing like this, what do you do? ✏️ When in doubt, rule it out. ✏️ Assess ocular motor skills and primitive reflexes. Find a developmental optometrist, someone who will assess ocular motor skills, not just visual acuity. I’m taking my kids to their evaluations soon and I am so excited to see how it goes! The downside of vision therapy? Insurance typically doesn’t cover it. The upside? If you find the right vision therapist, the issues are typically remediated for good! (Every case is unique of course). Have you seen kids writing like this?? Did you know it can be related to their eyes?! 👀 #occupationaltherapy #visiontherapy #handwriting #learningchallenges #adhd

For a week or so, the act of writing cursive was so distracting that’s all I could write about, but now it’s much easier. My handwriting still isn’t very good, but I’m definitely getting better - and yes, I know I shouldn’t be holding the pen like I’m trying to crush it. I saw that too. From a neurological perspective, as someone with ADHD, it’s hard to remember where the crosses and dots go even when I’ve just written the word… but this has also gotten easier, which means my neural pathways are changing! That’s very exciting, because if I can train my neural pathways with something as simple as cursive journaling, well, that’d be amazing. In another video, I’ll share what I do to work with my adhd and autism to incorporate the benefits while minimizing the handicaps. This is an example of something I do to intentionally adjust how my brain works. Yes, it’s kind of tedious, but so was carving the Grand Canyon… yet it still happened. Disclaimer: I’m not a neurologist and any claims about neurology or psychiatry are theoretical. #adhd #add #autism #thoughts #journaling #journal #mindfulness #cursive #handwriting #calligraphy #brain
