Replace reminders with external systems. Reminding relies on their already-overloaded working memory. Systems reduce the mental load entirely. Example: Instead of saying “don’t forget to take out the trash,” create a shared phone reminder that repeats every Tuesday night. 2. Offer choices instead of open-ended demands. ADHD brains struggle more with initiation than effort. Choices reduce the activation barrier. Example: Instead of “can you clean the kitchen,” say “would you rather do dishes now or sweep after dinner?” 3. Reduce shame when they forget. Shame shuts down motivation and trains avoidance. Safety restores engagement faster. Example: Instead of “you forgot again,” say “hey, let’s reset and figure out what would make this easier next time.” 4. Help them start, not just hold them accountable. Starting is the hardest neurological step. Presence lowers the activation energy. I appreciate you doing that,” even if it wasn’t done perfectly. They may hyperfocus While they can struggle with attention, they can also become intensely focused on things they enjoy. 4. Emotions run strong Many teens with ADHD feel things more intensely and can have a harder time regulating emotions. 5. School is exhausting Sitting still, following multi-step instructions, and staying on task for hours can be mentally draining. 6. They often get more negative feedback Teens with ADHD are frequently corrected or criticized, which can impact self-esteem. 7. Autism Support Group Launch••• Exciting announcement!! I am offering support groups for members of the autistic community (18+), that means autistic adults/friend’s and family of autistic adults. You don’t have to be autistic to join! I am so excited to be doing this because I know when I was first diagnosed I wanted a resource or group to join where I could talk to other people who might understand what I was going through. I really could not find anything and of the one or two resources I did come across, they were through insurance and extremely expensive, so I could not afford it. I want these groups to serve as a resource for autistic community members who are navigating life and hoping to connect with other autistics for support, inclusivity, growth and awareness—to get more in touch and connected to other autistics, and also to yourself. I am trained in group facilitation, and I am not a therapist so this is not therapy! If you are looking for therapy this will not serve that purpose. This is a support group to connect and learn with each other. We will talk about all different topics, like autism and friendships, romantic relationships, navigating work as an autistic person etc. No one is pressured to share and privacy is of utmost importance. These groups are all online so you must have your video on so that people feel safe and comfortable knowing who is behind the screen.
