A rare but amazing sight! Toad head agamas (Phrynocephalus mystaceus) have special flaps of skin on either side of their mouth that they can flare out to intimidate potential predators. Usually mine are so relaxed that they never employ this display. I must have accidentally startled this one during its wellness check. I don’t typically handle my animals but I do so around once a month to give them a full health inspection. This is just one of the amazing adaptations of this bizarre little lizard. And no, this is not AI. If you were woken up from a month long nap you’d be grumpy too! Today I took the toad headed agamas (Phrynocephalus mystaceus) out of here brumation. They’re grumpy but seem none the worse for wear. Originally from West Africa, non-native Peter’s rock agamas were introduced through the exotic pet trade and are now established and reproducing in Florida, especially in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. These two were filmed at Biscayne National Park. During breeding season, males develop a bright red/orange head and blue body. Females and juveniles are usually brown or gray, blending easily into urban structures. Both a male and female are shown in this video. They may look harmless, but: • They compete with native lizards for food and habitat • They thrive in urban environments • They continue expanding their range While they are not as heavily regulated as the green iguana or the Burmese python, they are still another established non-native reptile negatively affecting Florida’s ecosystem. Blue Bean is our male Pethiyagoda’s Crestless Lizard (Calotes pethiyagodai), an endangered agamid species found only in the Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka. These animals are active, beautiful, and very intelligent, and are easily the most interactive animals we have at The Gecko Gallery NYC! Being as smart as they are, these lizards are very comfortable with human interaction, and are almost always seen curiously watching guests walk by! When the door is open, Blue Bean jumps right out to say “Hi” to anyone. Unfortunately, these animals are endangered due to rapid habitat loss, which is especially threatening to animals with an already very limited range like these.
