In regions like Scandinavia and Siberia, these bright red, white-spotted mushrooms appear under pine and spruce trees displaying the classic red-and-white colors of Christmas and the tradition of decorated evergreen trees. One popular theory links fly agaric to early shamanic practices. Shamans were said to collect the mushrooms, dry them, and distribute them during the winter solstice as gifts meant to bring visions, healing, or good fortune. Because heavy snowfall often blocked doors, gifts were sometimes delivered through smoke holes or rooftops an origin story often compared to Santa entering through the chimney.
