I want to be clear, other jobs are much more dangerous and get paid less- it shouldn’t be that way. If one session can make or beak my entire life, show some respect and kindness and own up to what the reality of your dog’s behavior is. If they redirect, if they growl, if they lunge at ANYTHING. Your dog should be muzzled and physically managed and people at your home or interacting deserve to know that so they can make an informed decision. Most people do this and are incredible, but problem behaviors are only getting more intense and it can be life or death with human aggressive dogs.

When we evaluate an aggressive dog and discuss owner concerns and prognosis, we look at a few different things. What do you think? #dogbehavior #reactivedog #dogbehaviortraining #dogbehaviormodification

Hot take: If a trainer intentionally provokes your dog to display aggressive behavior “to work through it,” that’s a red flag 🚩 Effective behavior modification should look like training any other dog — not stress testing. When working with aggressive behavior, we: • Teach skills away from triggers first • Practice in low-stress, mildly distracting environments • Gradually introduce triggers at an intensity where the dog can stay calm and think Effective learning doesn’t happen when a dog is overwhelmed. It happens when they feel safe enough to process. Dog training is an unregulated industry, so being a conscious consumer matters. There are certifications that indicate advanced education in behavior and training. Comment “trainer” and I’ll DM you resources on how to choose a qualified trainer and what credentials actually mean. This might ruffle a few feathers, but I mean it with respect for our industry: If you’re training dogs and you’re not asking about health and wellness first, we have to do better. Behavior does not exist separately from the body. If a dog is reactive, shutting down, struggling with impulse control, breaking positions, slow to respond, suddenly “stubborn,” or having big emotional outbursts… the first question shouldn’t be, “How do we fix it?” It should be along the lines of: “Could something hurt?” As professionals, it’s our responsibility to: • Ask about pain history • Ask about GI health • Ask about sleep and recovery • Ask about diet • Ask about behavior changes We work with living beings. Training layered on top of unresolved discomfort isn’t just ineffective, it’s unfair. We should be holding ourselves to a higher standard than just behavior modification. This moment looks innocent. But for a dog, food equals safety. Interrupt it, and you teach tension instead of trust. That pattern shows up later — often where people least expect it. This is how dogs slowly become labeled “aggressive,” how behavior escalates, and how some eventually end up in shelters with no options left. I work with those dogs every day. Yes, I can help them but I’d rather prevent it from ever getting this far. If you want to understand behavior before it becomes a problem, follow @lizwolting.

Unpopular opinion: Just because a dog had a rough past doesn’t mean dangerous behavior should be brushed off. I fully believe a dog’s history matters. It helps us understand why they react the way they do. But understanding isn’t the same as excusing. Snapping, biting, lunging, or going after people or other dogs isn’t something we should just accept and move on from. At the end of the day, it’s still our responsibility to keep everyone safe — the dog included. Writing behavior off as “that’s just how they are because of their past” doesn’t help them. It actually sets them up to fail. You can be compassionate and hold boundaries at the same time. Loving a dog means doing the work to help them feel safer and behave better, not lowering the bar because life was unfair to them. . #dogtraining #unpopularopinion #responsibledogownership #dogbehavior #traumaisnotanexcuse

🐾Just a reminder this Monday that there are no bad dogs ❤️🩹 🐕🦺Just like us, dogs do what works for them to feel safe (even if that may not be the *best* choice for the long term). Our dogs are trying to cope and understand this crazy world we have placed them in - so let’s help them out, be a bit more empathetic, and guide them to tasks that can alleviate the stress in a more healthy, constructive, positive way. Happy Monday! #positivereinforcementdogtraining #dogbehavior #dogtrainingtips #dogwellness #science

THIS IS DANGEROUS👇 Why “forcing” your dog to interact with a stranger can be dangerous, WHICH INCLUDES, having strangers feed treats from their hand 1. It suppresses behavior, not fear Fear does not disappear. The dog just loses the ability to escape or communicate 2. It removes choice When dogs cannot create distance, their nervous system escalates. Stillness is often freeze, not calm 3. It damages trust If restraint happens during something scary, you can become part of the threat 4. It can raise bite risk later Dogs whose warnings are ignored often stop warning 5. It creates learned helplessness Shut down is not confidence. It is loss of control Dogs are tolerant & forgiving & resilient- please don’t take advantage of that Let me know if you want to see how I introduce strangers to worried dogs 🙏 (which I learned from practiced professional dog trainers & vet behaviorists) #dogtrainingclub #reactivedog #rescuedog #positivereinforcement

What if behavior is not disobedience but information? Dogs do not wake up planning to challenge us. Behavior is feedback from the body and the nervous system. When inflammation, stress, dehydration, or overstimulation are present, the body reacts. That reaction often gets labeled as stubbornness. Calm behavior is built from understanding the body, not overpowering it. This is why I do not separate training from wellness. Save this if you are ready to look deeper. #dog #dogmystic
