Caring for aging parents can be a LOT of work. Handling their finances, taking them to doctor appointments and church, shopping, laundry, their admin asst. and much more. BUT, I’m so thankful to still have them here, and to help them remain in their home for as long as possible. It is here where they’re most happy and with each other. They were older when they had me and I never dreamed they’d both still be around at this age. Advice I’d give you about caring for your aging parent… if I wasn’t afraid to hurt your feelings. ⬇️ 🔹 Siblings who’ve been silent for years won’t suddenly become caregivers overnight.

 🔹 If your parent is still their own person, they get to make their own choices - even the bad ones.

 🔹 You can prepare without their permission.

 🔹 A fall or hospitalization shouldn’t be your “starting point.”

 🔹 Most people don’t realize senior living isn’t always available the moment you need it. There are waitlists - sometimes months long.

 🔹 Families who plan early have options. Families who wait usually get what’s left.

 🔹 The system isn’t built to catch families who wait too long.

 🔹 Every family overestimates how much time they have to prepare.

 🔹 Planning ahead isn’t harsh. It’s the difference between making a choice and having it made for you.

 🔹 Hoping things will work out is not a plan.

 🔹 Your strength is in being ready - not in forcing them to follow your lead.

I’m 49 and my dad is soon to be 91 years old. I have been his caregiver for the last several years and it’s the hardest season I think I will ever experience in my life. No one tells you that caring for an aging parent is harder than raising your own kids….FULL STOP 100 PERCENT….and if you aren’t thinking in your head this is not what you signed up for you’re LYING…. I love my dad and I know there is nothing I can do differently, this is my life and there is nothing I can do about it. 😳No, I am not a heartless monster. Hear me out... When Dad passed, I felt it was my duty to take on all the tasks he managed so my mom wouldn’t feel overwhelmed. For a while, it worked, but as a working mom living 3 hours away, I burned out quickly. 🥴 Despite my pleas for her to downsize, move closer, or hire help, she refused—after all, she was being taken care of. ❌ It wasn’t until I stopped putting my life on hold to help that she realized things weren’t as manageable as she thought. We often talk about how to care for aging parents—doctor visits, medication, safety. But sometimes, what they truly long for isn’t help. It’s words. 💬 Therapists say there are a few simple things parents love to hear but often don’t. Saying them can mean more than any gift. 1. “Thank you. It mattered.” Acknowledging their effort, even the hard parts, brings healing. Try: “Thanks for the life you gave me—I accept all of it.” 2. “What would you do in my situation?” They may not guide your every step anymore, but this shows you still value their wisdom. 3. “Tell me what’s new in your life.” Your parents have full lives beyond being “mom” or “dad.” Asking about them makes them feel seen. 4. “Your guidance helped me.” Letting them know something they said or did shaped your life gives them deep joy. 5. “I’m happy.” No words mean more to a parent than knowing their child is content and okay. 🎯 Studies show older parents want to feel close but not controlled. They appreciate help—but not overprotection. So next time you talk to your parent, skip the checklist. Say something real.
