But this isn't strong soil - it's lacustrine clay, and it's one of the most dangerous materials to build on. Formed thousands of years ago at the bottom of calm, post-glacial lakes, this clay is made of ultra-fine particles that settled slowly underwater. Because of that, it traps huge amounts of water between weakly bonded layers. The scary part? It doesn't fail right away. When buildings, roads, or heavy machines sit on it, the water escapes slowly, causing: A Long-term sinking ▲ Uneven settlement ▲ Cracked foundations ▲ Structural damage years later That's why geotechnical engineers obsess over moisture content, consolidation rates, and shear strength before construction even begins. In real projects, this soil often needs vertical drains, preloading, or deep foundations just to stay stable. It may look satisfying. It may look solid.
