Threat Level Midnight Some isolated storms scatter across Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, casting showers and gusts in their path as they head north. We’re lucky tonight; we’re only landing in the tail end of a solid downpour that passed over the airport just ten minutes ago. But we’re not there yet. The arrival procedure will take us on quite a ride. Descending from 24,000 ft, our 747 gets hosed in torrential rain, hammering the windows and fuselage at nearly 550 km/h — nature’s version of a drive-through car wash, with added turbulence as a bonus. My First Officer is flying today and will perform the landing. Not an easy one, not because of the weather, but because we’re feather-light tonight, ferrying the aircraft back home after maintenance. A landing weight of just 181,000 kg (or 400,000 lbs for the American reader).
Considering the 747-400 is certified to land up to 302,000 kg (or 666,000 lbs), it behaves like a completely different aircraft altogether.
 Minimal engine thrust. An approach speed that rivals the cruising speed of a Cessna. And every gust of wind has free rein to toss us around like a paper airplane in a storm.
 A well-flown approach leads to a perfect touchdown, artificially roughened tenfold by the gear’s oleo struts, which barely compress under such a light landing weight. The system is designed to absorb far more weight than we’re using tonight, so it feels stiff as a brick. Idle reverse. Autobrakes 2. Back on terra firma.
