We don’t generally put anyone out on the river if the Haw River gage reads over 6 feet, which is pretty high! We don’t want anyone going over the dam, after all. Yesterday… it reached 21.5 feet!!! Monday was the first day of classes for Alamance County public schools. The rest of the state started Aug. 28. Why? Mold. Some 30 schools in the county had mold infestations that needed hardcore remediation. In some of the schools, the mold wreaked havoc on anyone with allergies. In others, the mold was toxic and a serious health threat to everyone. The county moved millions of dollars from existing projects and other sources to pay for the widespread clean up. While the school system gave the all clear on Monday, Sept. 11, the disruption extended beyond a couple extra weeks of vacation. Many schools didn’t announce they had mold issues until a week before the scheduled school year. Parents scrambled to find childcare at the last minute. Parents were alarmed in #Alamance County when they were notified a week before school started that schools would not be opening on time because there is a widespread toxic mold situation. "It was a little devastating," says Ebony Pinnix. "It was hard on working parents especially." The #schoolboard had known about the mold problem for years and done nothing about it. But still, the same folks kept getting elected and the problem kept getting worse. "If we don't have the right people in office, this won't be the end of it," says Ebony.
