A 20-minute nap is as effective as a coffee for restoring vigilance and attention! A growing body of research demonstrates that naps can improve performance, alertness, concentration, and judgment. Given these attributes are all critical for those on a space station orbiting the earth light-years away, it’s not shocking that NASA became interested in the benefits of napping. When NASA scientists conducted studies in astronauts, they discovered a twenty-five minute nap improved judgment by 35 percent and vigilance by 16 percent. No surprise, then, that NASA encourages afternoon snoozes. In another study, and one more relevant to most of our earthly situations, researchers pitted napping against coffee. They found that individuals who took fifteen to twenty minute naps awoke with more alertness and went on to perform better during the remainder of the day than those who, instead of napping, drank 150 mg of caffeine, or about the same amount in a Starbucks Grande. ‘Struggling to wake up? You may be suffering from Sleep Inertia, a state of reduced arousal and impaired cognitive and behavioural performance (aka feeling groggy). A sleep deprived brain 🧠 takes even longer to come back online, especially in the early hours of the morning. A study published in December compared alertness after pressing the snooze button 4 times (with up to 5 minute snoozes)vs waking in response to 1 alarm. The snoozers got 4min less sleep overall and had a slower reaction time vs a single alarm (Ogawa et al 2022). Another study investigating sleep inertia found that participants who did exercise the day before were more likely to wake up feeling alert the following day. A breakfast rich in carbohydrate (but low glycaemic index.. not a sugary energy drink!) also helped to improve morning alertness (Vallat et al 2022).
