#Alfred Meakin

You may have heard of “Flow Blue” (also “Flo Blue” or “Flown Blue - they are interchangeable). It’s a special type of pottery that was produced with cobalt blue printing that’s kind of blurry. This was the result of a “flow powder” (salt, white lead, & calcium carbonate) being added during the firing process to diffuse the blue color into the glaze. The blurry result is thought to have originally been a mistake, but people liked it and it caught on. 💙😄 Many different potteries produced versions of this style with varying “blurriness”, like this Alfred Meakin plate shown in the video, but none of the pieces were explicitly marked as “Flow Blue.” This is because “Flow Blue” was a popular term used to describe the style, not a term used by manufacturers when marking pieces. That being said, if you come across a piece that is stamped “Flow Blue” on the bottom (they’re out there!), just know it’s not old or “genuine” - It is a modern reproduction. Reproductions and fakes don’t always say “Flow Blue” though - sometimes the marks are copies of genuine old marks but are just a little “off” - like pattern names that never existed and lack of certain other information like “England,” etc. Modern reproductions can also be pretty, and there’s nothing wrong with collecting them.
