Algae Bloom South Australia 2025. My first dive at Port Norlunga since the Algae hit. The water is still quite green with the presence of algae. A number of fish around the jetty which was pleasuring to see. What are these strange green swirls in the water?    This video shows the explosive growth of a harmful algal bloom in Pyramid Lake, Nevada spanning from August 28 to November 6, 2024. Algae blooms form when warm temperatures meet nutrient-rich water and abundant sunlight. Under these conditions, toxic cyanobacteria multiply rapidly, releasing liver-damaging toxins that threaten public health.   Satellite data can act as an early warning system, monitoring water quality changes from space so communities can issue health advisories before people encounter contaminated water. Their blooms can be seen from space 🛰️! Coccolithophores are a type of single-celled algae (phytoplankton) covered in calcium carbonate plates called coccoliths. They can create massive blooms that turn ocean waters a beautiful turquoise or milky blue because of their reflective plates reflecting and scattering sunlight - imagine a tiny ball of mirrors! Blooms occur when conditions-like sunlight, nutrients, and temperature-are ideal, often in nutrient-rich upwelling zones. Coccolithophores play a key role in the marine biological pump and carbon cycle. They absorb carbon dioxide, and when they die, their coccoliths sink to the ocean floor, sequestering carbon. I had the opportunity to experience this bloom when visiting Port Alice, BC in @vancouverislandnorth, where the ocean waters are cold and nutrient rich! The Oregon Health Authority has issued an advisory to warn of a harmful algal bloom in and around the Willamette River’s Ross Island lagoon. The bloom carrying blue-green cyanobacteria — a perennial summer problem — has spread from the lagoon to near the Ross Island Bridge, south of downtown Portland. The Oregon Health Authority recommends staying out of the water near the bloom and keeping children or pets away.
