Take a Spin through an Algae Harvest: @bigelow_laboratory’s @ncma_bigelow is proud to collaborate with @atecalgae to bring the wonder of marine algae directly to classrooms nationwide! 🌊🧪📦 Earlier this summer, Research Technician @lpinard_sci harvested and shipped four batches of Nannochloropsis, a fast-growing marine algae, for the Algae Foundation. The algae is grown in our greenhouse in East Boothbay. Once it’s thriving, Lydia harvests it by spinning it through a centrifuge, a process that concentrates the algae from the bioreactor into a dense, vibrant culture. From there, it is carefully processed, packaged, and shipped to schools across all 50 states as part of the foundation’s Algae Academy kit. This hands-on STEM program gives students the chance to cultivate, monitor, and analyze algae growth while learning how this important photosynthetic organism contributes to a sustainable future.
