been building an AI that reads my newsletters and the security part kept me up at night :’( because think about it - you’re giving an AI access to your entire inbox. phishing emails, malicious links, all of it. most tools just rely on gmail’s spam filter and call it a day here’s the 5-layer system i built into my ai system : 1. layer 0: gmail’s built-in spam filter catches obvious spam before my code even sees it 2. layer 1: sender whitelist only emails from domains i explicitly trust get through (substack, beehiiv, etc) 3. layer 2: content security scan scans for phishing patterns like “verify your account immediately” or “your payment failed - click here” 4. layer 3: claude prompt hardening prevents prompt injection attacks where malicious emails try to trick the AI into following their instructions instead of mine 5. layer 4: url validation blocks suspicious url schemes (javascript:, data:, file://) checks against known malicious domains limits url length to prevent exploits every email has to pass ALL 5 layers before it gets processed zero-trust architecture = treat every email as malicious until proven safe. ‼️ and here’s the thing - this framework works for ANY ai tool you build not just email scanner ai the principle is: give minimal permissions, validate at every step, fail safely took me like 20 min to implement once i understood the pattern and now i actually sleep knowing my inbox isn’t feeding poison to my AI 🥹 save this if you’re building anything that touches sensitive data and follow @pearlprakash_official for more content in tech and ai 💜 #buildinpublic #buildwithai #claude #agenticai #techjobs

so i was building an AI agent that scans my gmail newsletters and summarizes the top 3 most useful ones was so focused on making it work that i didn’t think about security then I took a step back and spent a lot of time researching about what makes AI agents production-grade vs just hobby projects ( security wise ) so what AM i doing to make sure this is secure? 5 Things: 1. least privilege access - only give minimum permissions. mine gets gmail.readonly - can read, can’t send or delete anything 2. zero data storage - process emails in-memory, generate summary, done. no databases storing my personal stuff 3. prompt injection defense - people can hide malicious instructions in emails. you need to scan content before AI touches it. 4. secure credential management - API keys in .env files, sensitive tokens in gitignored folders with chmod 600 5. audit trails - log what the agent does but not the actual email content this is what separates someone who can build an AI agent from someone who can build a production-grade secure system people actually trust testing locally right now but building with these standards from day one save this if you’re building AI agents with claude code 👇 and follow @pearlprakash_official for more content in AI and tech 💜 #buildinpublic #buildwithai #agenticai #claude #techjobs
