Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Wednesday criticized the Trump administration’s “ill-advised threats” toward Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, arguing they only serve to alienate the U.S. closest allies with little to gain.   “Close ties with our northernmost allies are what make America’s extensive reach in the Arctic possible. And I have yet to hear from this administration a single thing we need from Greenland that this sovereign people is not already willing to grant us,” the former majority leader said on the floor.   “Unless and until the president can demonstrate otherwise, then the proposition at hand today is very straightforward: incinerating the hard-won trust of loyal allies in exchange for no meaningful change in U.S. access to the Arctic.”   President Trump renewed his threats for the U.S. to take over Greenland following the U.S. military operation that arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, worrying allies in Europe and members of Congress alike.   “The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” the president wrote Wednesday on social media.   “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable.”   Sen.
