Hi Friends — I’m excited to let you know that today I’m launching a Substack. This is one of the rungs of my reinvention — and the perfect playground for all the things I want to try out, professionally and personally. Substack will be one-stop-shopping for the video podcasts I’m producing, as well as the video diary I’m shooting as i try to figure out my future. If you’re also in the midst of a sea change, or if you just want to check out the stuff I’m experimenting with, please join me over on Substack. I look forward to connecting there! alisyncamerota.substack.com #reinvention

Brutalism tries to face up to a mass production society and drag a rough poetry out of the confused and powerful forces which are at work. - Alison Smithson

What are the ethics of displaying a fragment of somebody's former home in a museum? Robin Hood Gardens was a brutalist housing estate built to designs by Alison and Peter Smithson from 1966–72 for the London County Council in Poplar in the east end but was demolished last year. The Smithsons took a difficult, rectangular site wedged up against a 6-lane motorway and built two long canted blocks which turned their back to the road, with flats facing the green space in the middle of the estate. They theorised that by arranging flats along wide access corridors, they might create space for neighbours to socialise and recreate the tight knit communities of East End streets as ‘Streets in the Sky’. As part of the demolition process, the V&A preserved a portion of the building’s facade, a move criticised by some campaigning to save the building. What is brutalist architecture? A striking yet heavy aesthetic, brutalist architecture is considered one of the most controversial styles due to its cold and concrete appearance.
