𝑹𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐. ‘𝑨𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝑻𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒂’ (𝑨𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒐) from 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝒊𝒏 𝑨 𝑴𝒂𝒋𝒐𝒓 [No. 11] KV 331 (ca. 1783) by 𝑾𝒐𝒍𝒇𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒖𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒛𝒂𝒓𝒕 (1756-1791). 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿: 𝑳𝒖𝒄 𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆́𝒋𝒐𝒖𝒓 (Pianoforte) 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Pianoforte made in 2019 by 𝑹𝒐𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒆𝒓, after Viennese piano maker 𝑨𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑾𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒆𝒓 (1752-1826). 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Saint-Augustin Church, in June 2021. The last movement of the Sonata in A Major, popularly known as the 𝙏𝙪𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙍𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙤 or 𝙏𝙪𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝, is often heard on its own and is one of Mozart’s best-known piano pieces. It imitates the sound of Turkish Janissary bands, the music of which was much in vogue at that time. Various other works of the time imitate this music, including Mozart’s own opera 𝑫𝒊𝒆 𝑬𝒏𝒕𝒇𝒖̈𝒉𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒖𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒎 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒍 (The Abduction from the Seraglio) [KV 384] (1782). With the Ottoman Empire on their doorstep, the Imperial Hapsburgs were utterly fascinated by Turkish habits and customs. Musically, composers from 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒏 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒑𝒉 𝑭𝒖𝒙 to 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒑𝒉 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒅 𝑮𝒍𝒖𝒄𝒌 engaged in various 𝙏𝙪𝙧𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨, taking pleasure in reproducing the sonorities of the Janissaries’ exotic instruments, modal scales, and distinctive rhythms. In Alla Turca, Mozart offers a simple, well-articulated march that alternates relentlessly between major and minor modes.
