Want the dark, surprising truth behind the amazing highland monument seen on The Traitors? The Fyrish Monument is a prominent landmark in Easter Ross, on the hills overlooking the Cromarty Firth between Alness and Evanton. The busy A9 with its industrial traffic and caravans of North Coast 500 tourists carries thousands within sight of it every day. The monument, the trees on the hill, the big estate mansion of Novar House at the foot of the hill, were all paid for through bribes and war plunder from Bengal and elsewhere in India. Sir Hector Munro had committed some serious atrocities in India - which you can read about in my article next month in The Scots Mag - and at home was kicking people off the land, enclosing once common land and claiming it as his own, actions which increased work insecurity. There was huge local resistance to Hector. Hundreds of locals led away the sheep that hector had brought in to replace the people with, only to be confronted by the police called in by Hector. Again, read next months article in @scots_magazine for all the info During all this change, there was a famine. Hector paid local folk labour money to build him this monument, so that they could then buy some of the grain being shipped to stave off hunger. The idea that I repeat in this video that these gates were modelled on the gates of a city in India hasn’t been confirmed in really reputable sources btw, so take that with a pinch of salt.

Perched atop Fyrish Hill, just above Alness, this stunning monument is a true hidden gem. I stumbled upon this place purely by coincidence, after parking my car at the trailhead that leads up to the monument. Despite the bad weather, I decided to embark on an early morning hike and was amazed by the beauty of the surroundings. The trail itself spans approximately 6km in total and offers breathtaking views of the Scottish countryside. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 FYRISH MONUMENT - ALNESS 🏰 Sometimes it isn’t about where you are, it’s about the journey to get there that actually is what counts the most. The day we walked up to Fyrish Monument was roasting and truth be told, I wasn’t really in the mood. But my god did we reap the rewards ten fold with the most incredible views of the Cromarty Firth as we ventured up the hill. You could see as far as your eyes would allow at the top. It truly was breathtaking. Mountains, rolling hills, the gorgeous valley and the North Sea. What a treat we embraced at the top. And Fyrish Monument itself is beautiful. A spot that is well worth stopping off at in the bonnie Highlands if you’re ever up that way 🫶 🚁/📸: @calums_pictures
