The image was taken by Wilhelm Brasse, a prisoner forced to document arrivals and deaths. He later said he never forgot her face. She became one of the hundreds of thousands of children murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau — a number too large to comprehend, but a life that once existed all the same.
