Every class is a choice: are you moving in the right direction or wasting energy heading the wrong way? Every effort counts, but only when it’s focused. The more time you spend repeating mistakes without awareness, the further you get from your goals. In class, each adjustment, each correction, is a step toward the right path. Keep practicing with intention, notice where your energy goes, and guide yourself forward. This is how progress truly happens.

Dance teaches many things. Beyond artistry and skill, some of the most valuable life lessons learned during dance training are the art of Preparation, Discipline, and Independence. Most dance parents are not trained dancers and for many students, independent performance preparation is not taught at home and does not come naturally. This is why it is important to teach preparation, encourage discipline, and practice independence. I am grateful my teachers taught me these skills as well, so I can pass them on to the next generation of dancers. 💕

Good training is not about throwing a hundred corrections at a dancer at once. It is about giving the body a clear map so it knows where it belongs. When students move away from their center, they must understand how to return to it every single time. Travel, come back. Move, reorganize. Finish and arrive with awareness. When that pathway becomes familiar, the shoulders, the coordination, and the timing begin to settle naturally instead of by force. Teaching this way builds independence. Dancers stop guessing and start recognizing where “home” is in their body, and how to re-find it even after something goes wrong.

One of the most dangerous phrases I hear is: “I’m waiting for the right time.” And yes — there is a time and place for certain decisions. But often, if we’re honest, we’re not waiting… we’re procrastinating on the dreams we say matter to us. Progress doesn’t have to be a giant leap. It can be one small action. One class. One workout. One application. One decision. Small steps compound, and over time they take you much further than waiting ever will. Take the step of faith today — even if it’s a tiny one. When we over-adjust a student’s steps, we take away their opportunity to learn from the challenge. I often see dancers execute a beautiful tendu, then a tombé, a temps de flèche, all movements they’ve been building toward, but if we intervene too quickly, we skip the process that makes them stronger. The purpose of teaching isn’t just to show the “right” movement, it’s to guide students through the journey, so they grow resilient, confident, and capable. In our Teacher’s Training, we explore how to coach thoughtfully, correct intentionally, and help students reach their full potential.
