Imagine my surprise when a bunch of animation sketches of King Triton from The Little Mermaid ‘resurfaced’ from a forgotten corner of my archive! Triton is furious with Ariel for being smitten by a human. His line: “(Humans are) spineless, savage, harpooning fish eaters…” I had fun animating this because the emotion is so intense—and it’s personal. I based parts of Triton’s frustration on my own father, especially how he used to discipline my older sister when she’d stay out past curfew. A technical thing I was still figuring out here: how Triton’s hair and beard should move underwater. My first scenes had them resting on his shoulders—totally wrong for a submerged environment. Water movement means everything floats, reacting to the current. Once that clicked, it transformed how he animated. Just somethin’ I animated on my own downtime, for fun! I found an incredible bit of dialogue by @ladygg50 that I immediately fell in love with and had to bring it to life through the beloved character, Mama Odie from “The Princess and the Frog”! It is just under 30 seconds of animation (691 frames to be exact) that I’ve been chipping away at over the course of.. literally months.. (I could only work on it during weekends, holidays, and late at night). 😅 Mama Odie was by far one of the most challenging characters I’ve animated.. While I can always find room for endless improvements, I can confidently say that I’m pretty proud of how it came out! Mama odie! This was one of the most challenging pieces I’ve ever animated. I only had a couple drawings by Andreas to go off of and didn’t watch anything from the movie because I didn’t want to be influenced in any way. Basically I was guessing 100% of the time. Thank you @mattwilliames for giving me notes on my rough pass and encouraging me to study ray Charles for how blind people actually communicate!
