CLIFF NOTES: Effectiveness of Five Personal Shark-Bite Deterrents for Surfers by Charlie Huveneers, Sasha Whitmarsh, Madeline Thiele, Lauren Meyer, Andrew Fox, and Corey J. A. Bradshaw. PeerJ (2018). DOI: 10.7717/peerj.5554. This study tested five commercial shark deterrents developed for surfers to determine whether they reduced interactions with white sharks. The products included the Ocean Guardian Freedom Plus Surf and Rpela, which emit electric pulses designed to overwhelm a shark’s electroreceptors, two magnetic devices by SharkBanz, and a scented surf wax called Chillax Wax that claims to mask human scent. The experiments were conducted at the Neptune Islands in South Australia where white sharks naturally aggregate. Researchers carried out 297 controlled trials using surfboard-sized test boards with bait attached underneath to mimic a surfer’s foot. Stereo video cameras measured shark movements and distances while 44 individually identified great white sharks made over 1,400 passes at the boards. Randomized trial order, blind video analysis, and statistical mixed-effects models were used to reduce bias and account for repeated encounters by the same sharks. Power analysis showed the tests could reliably detect behavioral changes of about 15 percent or more. The results demonstrated that only the Ocean Guardian Freedom Plus Surf produced a measurable effect, lowering the percentage of bait taken from 96 percent in control trials to 40 percent and increasing the average distance between sharks and bait from about 1.6 to 2.6 meters. The other devices showed little or no consistent influence on shark behavior. The authors note that all trials were performed near a seal colony with fish bait present, creating high motivation for sharks to approach, and this context may differ from normal surfing conditions. The findings suggest that while one device can reduce close encounters, no deterrent completely prevents sharks from approaching, emphasizing the importance of independent testing and realistic expectations of product performance. *40% seems good I guess
