By controlling exposure, the anglerfish can pulse or dim the light to mimic small prey. Curious animals drift closer — and in the deep sea, curiosity can be fatal. When the anglerfish opens its mouth, it rapidly expands its buccal cavity, creating a pressure difference that pulls water — and prey — inward before escape is possible.
