Harpegnathos venator, commonly known as the Asian jumping ant, is a remarkable predatory ant species native to Southeast Asia. Unlike most ants that rely heavily on pheromone trails and group recruitment, Harpegnathos venator hunts primarily by sight. With its well-developed compound eyes, it visually tracks its prey, slowly approaches… then suddenly jumps to seize it. This behavior is unusual among ants and resembles the strategy of a solitary predator more than that of a typical colony hunter. In this video, you can see workers hunting a Red Runner roach, Blatta lateralis. This fast-moving cockroach species, commonly used in feeder breeding, provides a protein-rich prey item suited to their predatory lifestyle. If you look closely, you may notice the functional stinger at the tip of the abdomen. Belonging to the subfamily Ponerinae, Harpegnathos venator possesses a true sting capable of injecting venom. The venom quickly subdues the prey, making capture and transport far more efficient.
