The band would normally refine Martin’s demos. But Flood wanted to change this from the start. The finished product often turned very similar to the demo. The next track they worked was ‘Policy of truth’ and again started off a little bit the way it had been from the demo and they decided to experiment and tried to get this feeling that was not rock, but it was driven by synths, they added the guitar riff and the way the drums were programmed. It was a definite shift in everybody’s attitude. The song had many sonic hidden layers; years ahead it was featured in the trailer of Agatha Christie’s movie based “Dead in the Nile”, starring Gal Gadot and Kenneth Branagh and also in Robert Lepage’s film “The confessional”. It was released as the third single in May 1990, three weeks before the World Violation Tour kicked off, and ranked at number 16 in British charts. Francõis Kevorkian (with a Richard Nixon's sample) and The KLF remixed the track. @antoncorbijn4real filmed the video in New York, while he was conducting photoshoots and filming footage to be used for the screens of the World Violation Tour. Gahan drove a 1958 Ford Fairlane Club Victoria across the Meatpacking District, Andy was at the East River Promenade, near Williamsburg Bridge and Martin shots were taken at the Central Park. B-side was an instrumental called "Kaleid", which was used as intro for the 'Word Violation Tour' and samples of the song 'What Ruthy said' by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and also from 1967 song 'Hey Joe' by Jimmy Hendrix. The first single from Memento Mori was ‘Ghosts again’, written by Martin Gore and Richard Butler. It was released on February 9th on various digital platforms. The video was directed by @antoncorbijn4real real at the Starrett Lehigh building terrace in New York and inspired by the 1957 film “The seventh seal” by Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. It had more than five million reproductions on YouTube the first five days. I have to say that my first reaction to the song and the video was “this is the perfect combination of melancholic and joy”. Talking to Italian Radio RTL 102.5 Dave admitted that the idea of him crawling at a backyard cemetery was him and not Anton’s. He also said that the recording process is faster now; they don’t have to be monitoring the oscilloscopes all the time like in the eighties. The band always tried to find the compatibility of the human element and the technological part in the music. Martin told the Hollywood Reporter “the single has a very contemporary sound; we listened to it a hundred times and we’ve never got tired of it. That’s a good sign. I’m really excited about the tour, new generations always come to the shows and that’s a fact that still amazes me. We’ve never thought of splitting the band because of Andy’s death, he would have never wanted that. We agreed that as John Lee Hooker used to say ‘music is a healing process.” In conversation with Irish Radio Nova, Martin said “in the last tour, I don’t remember which show it was, but I told our manager, I can’t go on stage today, I was feeling completely drained, I don’t know how I finally played that night, but when the show was finished, I told him ‘They’ve cured me’.
