I have struggled with my appearance throughout my cancer story. With the changes cancer brought, I struggled to feel beautiful-and sometimes I still do. But when I face these moments, I remember my response to my doctor, “Aren’t we all a little different?”. Today, I’m able to share my cancer story and my beautiful scars. BREATHING TECHNIQUE FOR LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE • - Lymphatic drainage is crucial for reducing swelling and inflammation in all your tissues: face, legs and the organs internal to your body, as well as your brain. It’s crucial not just for aesthetic reasons (reducing puffiness of the eyes, etc.), but also for immune surveillance of infections. - Lymphatic drainage is encouraged by low level muscular movement such as when you walk or do sustained cardio; there are also manual lymphatic drainage approaches like lymphatic massage. - Yet one of the most effective ways to encourage lymphatic drainage is through diaphragmatic breathing. - That is because a key reservoir for lymph fluid called the cisterna chyli, which resides in the abdomen, and when you do lymphatic breathing as described in this clip, it creates a pressure difference between the lymphatic vessels leading out of the chyli and the blood supply they feed back into (which are just below your clavicles). In other words, diaphragmatic breathing access as a sort of pump to encourage lymphatic drainage. - So it’s encouraged to do a few rounds of diaphragmatic breathing a few times per day, especially if you’re not getting as much movement as you normally do, in order to encourage lymphatic drainage. Someone told me recently that people listen with their eyes. With the increased use of cameras and everything ending up on social media, performances need to be visually engaging as well as sound amazing. Pop artists have embraced that theirs is a visual art form. Classical music hasn’t really. I’d even say classical has an image problem as concerts can still look old fashioned and not be visually exciting to watch. I’ve heard about 50% of classical musicians say they’re too serious to care about looks on stage, that our focus should be solely the music. I wish that were the world we live in, but it isn’t. And that hasn’t been true for the other 50% of us (aka the women) for a while now. Someone commented on my previous video that it’s ironic how the same people saying “looks don’t matter” are the ones insisting women must dress and style their hair a certain way so they “don’t distract from the music.” She’s right. The number of reviews complaining about a conductor having her hair down, or a soloist’s dress being too sparkly, or not wearing makeup and therefore being “unpresentable” rather than discussing their performances is appalling. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this happen to a (straight) male classical musician. So I’m torn. We need to make concerts more visually engaging to bring in younger audiences. But I don’t want to perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards or suggest women alone should carry this responsibility. Also - why are women getting criticised either way? We need to collectively think about making our art form more visually engaging. There are lovely audiences missing out on great music because they don’t think it’s exciting to watch.
