When Leo died, a taxidermist was tasked with preserving him. However, the craftsman was given only the pelt and bones—and he had never seen a living lion. Operating a century before photography, he relied on heraldry and biblical art to reconstruct the creature’s face. The result is a surreal artifact that reflects the 18th-century European struggle to interpret the unknown. Today, Leo remains a permanent resident of Gripsholm Castle, standing as a fascinating case study in the history of natural science and human perception.
