We are often drawn to traits in other people that reflect parts of ourselves we have not resolved. Maybe it is emotional distance. Maybe it is unpredictability. Maybe it is a fear of vulnerability. Whatever it is, it feels familiar. And familiarity feels powerful. Instead of seeing the reflection, we focus on fixing the person. We become preoccupied with helping them grow, regulating their emotions, or proving we are different from everyone else in their life. It feels meaningful. It feels purposeful. But sometimes the intensity is not about them changing. It is about us avoiding what needs attention within ourselves. The hook is not always chemistry. Sometimes it is recognition. When we stop trying to change them, we are forced to ask a harder question. What part of me is this relationship activating?
