Come for a wee walk in the woods with me in the Knapdale Forest of Argyll to the abandoned township of Kilmory Oib. I've visited a lot of fascinating places in my time, but something about this place felt different. Walking the rutted track amongst the trees to the sound of the noisiest birds I've ever encountered made it feel like I'd travelled back in time. Eventually, you reach a clearing and the ruined township of Kilmory Oib appears before you. Squint a little, stoke the imagination while peering through the drizzle and you can almost imagine the place coming back to life. A community with up to 17 buildings once lived here, working together to make the most of what was around them. They grew crops to feed themselves and the Highland Cows that gazed nearby, selling some of the cattle to drovers each year to take to Lowland markets. The men fished in both the nearby Loch Coille Bharr and the sea while the women spun, looked after the home and kept an eye on playing children. Occupied from the 16th to the 19th century, these buildings were once full of laughter, song and stories where now it's mostly just wind amongst bracken. It's thought that the last remaining occupants left for good in the mid 1800s after the Arichonan clearance saw tenants in the area evicted by their landlords. Sheep replaced people and some of these buildings have been adapted to hold the woolly invaders. There are lots of abandoned townships across Scotland, but Kilmory Oib has one unique feature. There's a small stone above a pool of water, carved with a very faint Christian cross along with orbs and animals. Dating from around the 9th century, it shows that settlement here goes back long before the township and it was clearly seen as important enough to leave where it was. Did the last residents of Kilmory Oib have a theory to what it meant? Will places like this ever be lived in again? #Scotland #ScotlandIsCalling #ScotlandIsNow #WildAboutArgyll #Argyll #YourScotland

How old do we think the myth of the Cailleach is? 2000, 4000…11000 years old?! Can we pool our thoughts? When I heard this film back I realised I’m not pronouncing her name properly which is a bit embarrassing as I’ve been banging on about her for nearly a decade but it was sunset (3pm) and cold and I needed to go in ❄️ #storytelling #folklore #celticwoman #argyll #ancienthistory

Have you visited Mull’s most photographed spot? 📷 Believed to have been here since the mid 70s, these three wrecked fishing boats can be found just outside the village of Salen 🛥️ They were brought here by a charismatic local who had plans to salvage them; this never happened and they’ve since lay in ruin ⚓️ In recent years the boats have deteriorated badly — attempting to board the boats is not advised ⚠️ @visitmullandiona @wildaboutargyll #isleofmull #mull #argyll #wildaboutargyll #scottishcollective #yourscotland #yourbritain #yourhebrides #scotspirit #onlyinscotland #simplyscotland #visitscotland #scotlandmagazine #scotland_greatshots #hiddenscotland #thisisscotland #scotlandshots #scotshots #ig_scotland #scotland
