Did you know an ARP 2500 is in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind? ARP Instruments’ VP of Engineering, Phil Dodds, was on set of the film to install and manage the ARP 2500 synthesizer, as well as play the five “alien tones” composed by John Williams. He also programmed it for the sounds the filmmakers wanted, a similar duty he had on other science fiction films, such as Logan’s Run and some of the early Star Trek movies. John Williams wrote over 300 examples of the iconic five-tone motif before Spielberg landed on the one incorporated into the film’s signature theme!
