Realised I never shared this vid of when I painted a surfing raptor skatedeck for Frankie's birthday. Here it is! ⁣ ⁣ The story of Ronnie the Raptor 🦖🌊🍌⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Once there was a raptor called Ronnie and he loved surfing but his problem was that he would be so loving a surf sesh that he didn't wanna go back to land to eat when he was hungry. How easier it would be to apply this symbol on top of the eagle, like in a 2-Dimensional image when you can just take a white marker or paint and draw it as the last step of the creative process...  The answer is 'much easier' 🤣 than actually having to start with the symbol and then create the bird around it. Clearly I'm not making my life easier, but there is a weird satisfaction present in the process of filling the wings and body that are oddly divided into smaller areas by dominating lines. The packs of bent paper strips never fit the spaces exactly: as you can see in the process video, I often have to apply a bit of force or wiggling action to insert them - some adjustment or pressing down is often needed to ensure the glue reaches the background surface. Unfortunately I didn't take many process videos while working on this Caribbean diptych; here is all I've got: this flower, which in real time took me hours, is just a tiny component of all the tropical abundance that I created for this commission. 💥Flame artwork - NEW reel 🔥 I love the texture from these zigzag-ed paper strips (which I make by hand without crimping tools - because I like the crisp creases you get this way vs smooth waves that you normally get with a crimper tool). But these are a nightmare to work with because papercstrips treated this way take ages to attach to the background: I dip them into a glue puddle, like I do with any paper elements, before placing them into the position, but then they start to move... Just like little warms. Edge-glued zigzag paper strips don't want to stay in the prescribed position, it will keep slightly moving and adjusting until the glue is absolutely dry (which takes a long time because they don't sit still). So my way of dealing with this issue is to use the glue puddle that was sitting there drying for a while - this makes glue much sticker and it dries faster). 👁👁 Plenty of time and patience went into creating this 'Young Energy' paper portrait Basically there were 3 parts in the creative process (well, 4 if you also count the sketching stage which actually took a while: the face, all of the geometric shapes were drawn and colored quite neatly because this was supposed to be a book cover art, so the sketch had to go through a few rounds of amendments and approvals).  First I covered the face with tightly packed strips of paper - had to pack them in as tight as possible to avoid the appearance of wrinkles and weird gaps on the young skin surface. Initially I opted to go with a more natural colour tone for the face with just a few colorful accents, but had to introduce some more vibrant colours with markers in the end in order to create > coherence with the surrounding geometric vibrancy.  Then I worked on preparing the braids (in this video I changed the order to focus on the colorful patterns), but usually I prefer to have all the major elements ready to go before I start putting the portrait together.  Same goes with the large paper circles that I place in the beginning of the video - I rolled them ahead of time.  Overall this project required lots of precision: because I have an officially approved sketch to follow, I couldn't randomly change colors, shapes, proportions and positions of all elements like I would do with self-initiated designs, for that reason this artwork took me almost twice as long to create.  Unfortunately this portrait was never used as a book cover; this happens quite often in book publishing - usually for marketing reasons that might have nothing to do with the artistic quality of the artwork - at least I hope so 😂 #paperart #girlportrait #mixedmediaart #papercraft #instaartwork #artreels #quilling #artsandcrafts #colorfulart #artreel #girlart #artproject #handmadeart #craftsposure #paperquilling #artworking #artinprogress #artprocess #artistatwork #icreate #colorart #collageartwork #paperartwork
