Day 18/30 Video Challenge: ASHA Lets Us Down Again Why is ASHA removing DEI language from our certification standards? Here’s the truth: It’s not about clinical care. It’s about politics. ASHA is responding to pressure from recent federal executive orders, tied to so-called “family values”, that target words like diversity, equity, and inclusion. They’re afraid of losing funding, facing lawsuits, or getting blocked by conservative lawmakers. So instead of standing firm, they’re backing down, stripping out words like cultural humility and DEI to protect the certification. They say the values aren’t changing! But, if you remove the language, you are changing the values. This is about power. And right now, ASHA is choosing political safety over client safety AND over clinician integrity. We can’t let that slide. 1. Fill out the survey they sent out and let them know you’ll be exploring options to leave ASHA if you have to sacrifice your values. 2. Check your state’s licensure laws — see if CCC-SLP is required, optional, or just one route among others. 3. Talk to your employer. Ask if CCC-SLP is a true requirement or just a default. Anything I missed? Start imagining alternatives — like stronger state associations or non-ASHA networks that advocate for clinicians and clients.
