• • • • Credits: ESO Hashtags: #buraconegro #blackhole #blackholes #astronomy #astronomia #astronomers #space #curiosidades #vocesabia #galaxia #estrelas #stars #universe #universo #telescope #telescopio #vialactea #milkyway #nasa #eso #observatory #observatorio #chile

With the strong hurricane force winds, snow and ice, scientists and astronomers haven’t been able to get to the summit of Mauna Kea. It’s a loss of valuable time that would be spent scanning the heavens to discover new galaxies, stars, planets and asteroids. As Ben Gutierrez reports, since snowplows can’t cut through the ice, there’s no timeline on when the road to the summit will reopen. #Hawaii #MaunaKea #Astronomy #Astronomer #Astronomers #Scientists #Galaxy #Stars #Summit #HawaiiNewsNow

💫🏁 A potentially hazardous near-Earth #asteroid is spinning faster and faster every year, and researchers aren’t sure why. The space rock, known as 3200 Phaethon, is around 3.4 miles (5.4 kilometers) wide, and its orbit through the #solarsystem takes it closer to the sun than any other named asteroid, reaching a minimum distance of around 13 million miles (20.9 million km) from the sun — less than half the distance from Mercury to the sun. 😳 Why is Phaethon spinning faster? Will its orbit change? Could it impact Earth? #Astronomers are studying one of the most exotic and weird star systems ever discovered, 18,000 light years away. The MicroQuasar SS433 scientific animation shows an unusual gamma-ray ‘Heartbeat’ produced by a black hole constantly sucking matter from the star, orbiting each other once every 13 days. This matter collects on an accretion disk before falling into the 20 solar-mass black hole. However, some of the matter does not fall into the black hole, but is hurled out into space in two narrow jets at the top and bottom. As the accretion disk does not lie exactly in the orbital plane of the two partners, it sways like a spinning top set at an angle, and with it the jets do so as well, describe spirals in space. In the same rhythm as the tumbling jets and accretion disk, an inconspicuous gas cloud about 100 light years away shines in the light of the gamma radiation. Last month, a group of astronomers from the University of Arizona discovered what looked like the face of a bear on Mars. This isn’t the first time that people have found a face in the heavens, and it made the team at “Something Offbeat” wonder why we are always looking to the sky for meaning.
