The first Mario Bros. commercial from 1983. I’m down the rabbit hole of origin commercials for massive entertainment IP… that would help define a generation of new gamers. This is pre empire Nintendo, still experimenting, still figuring out how to communicate gaming and develop characters. Two plumbers flipping turtles and crabs like that is a totally normal job. No princess, no storyline, no polish. Just mechanics being sold as fun. This is the moment Mario stops being a side character from Donkey Kong and starts becoming the center of gravity. What makes this commercial so important is that you are watching Nintendo right before it becomes Nintendo. This is the bridge to Super Mario Bros. without anyone realizing it yet. You can see the blueprint forming in real time. Character driven gameplay, simple but addictive loops, something you can pick up instantly but keep playing forever. It is not trying to be iconic, which is what makes it iconic. These are the moments I care about most as a collector. The early signals before the market catches up, before the story is written. Once you see this, you understand Mario was not lightning in a bottle.
